Except that many (if not most) writers have flipped and now default to using female pronouns for indeterminate sex. For someone who grew up the other way, it is grating in the extreme.

Despite the efforts of Language Utopians and SF writers (s/he, hir, &lt;i&gt;sahn&lt;/i&gt;), English has no animate neuter/indeterminate gender.
