Except that many (if not most) writers have flipped and now default to using female pronouns for indeterminate sex. For someone who grew up the other way, it is grating in the extreme.

I agree about the hair thing – someone with too perfect a coiff gives off an air of “hustler”.

Because classical English defaults indeterminate/mixed gender to male.

Despite the efforts of Language Utopians and SF writers (s/he, hir, sahn), English has no animate neuter/indeterminate gender.

(At least it before the Global Replace String “man” with String “person” a few years back…)
