DNC Recap–UPDATED
Friday, August 29th, 2008I think the pundits are blinded by the radiance. They need to step away from the light to see the whole picture.
Obama talked about being your brother’s keeper. Huh. Like he cares for his brother, I suppose. (A reader, Matt, reminded me of that.) But what it really sounds like taxpayers will pay, pay, pay.
Overall message: socialism and how will we pay?
Overall feel: like eating a bowl of Fruit Loops. Tastes good. Looks pretty. Hungry five minutes later.
Update:
Fascinating. You know how I had trouble articulating the emotion of the night and really, the whole DNC? I kept using the word “weird”. Something felt off, and I concluded that it was that it seemed over and sad, but I think there is more and Charles Krauthammer got to the heart of it, while I talked around it some. I’m getting this from Maggie’s Farm, where she asks “Can anyone say they know Obama?”
The psychiatrist Krauthammer notes, interestingly, that there is nobody to vouch for Obama. Shrinks are trained to notice things like that: how do people relate, and to whom. Where are the witnesses to his ability? Where are his friends and colleagues? Are there any left? A quote:
So where are the colleagues? The buddies? The political or spiritual soul mates? His most important spiritual adviser and mentor was Jeremiah Wright. But he’s out. Then there’s William Ayers, with whom he served on a board. He’s out. Where are the others?
The oddity of this convention is that its central figure is the ultimate self-made man, a dazzling mysterious Gatsby. The palpable apprehension is that the anointed is a stranger — a deeply engaging, elegant, brilliant stranger with whom the Democrats had a torrid affair.
Having slowly woken up, they see the ring and wonder who exactly they married last night.
Yes, he does seem like the elegant mysterious stranger who arrived out of nowhere like the Music Man. Immature people without personal foundations fill in those blanks with their own hopes and dreams.
Yes. Where are his friends? Does he have any that he’d be willing for us to know? It very much strikes me that it’s Barack and Michelle against the world. And maybe, that’s the way it is, too. I mean, Bill and Hillary are that way. Do they have friends? Or is everyone an associate who is getting them on their way to their goals? We’ve all worked with people like that. They view people as either helpful or harmful to their personal aims. People are viewed through the filter of a want getting filled. Or maybe, it’s just that the Obamas have been schooled in such distrust because of their immersion in Marxist ideology and identity politics, thus making them insular.
Live Blogging Barack Obama’s Speech and Other DNC Fun
Thursday, August 28th, 2008I’ll be live blogging tonight here. And rather then do it sober, I’m doing this the way it should be done: eating Tex-Mex and drinking a Corona. I am a citizen of the world, after all. Well, Obama thinks I am. Really, I’m a proud American and as such, mmmmm beer.
Tonight, the potential for drama is great. Between the Clintons and the rest of the colorful cast of characters (and by that I’m referring to the biased media buffoons), forget Obama himself, all kinds of craziness can happen. Imagine 80,000 impassioned Obamatons chanting, borg-like, “Yes we can!” in front of a columned stage designed by Brittney Spear’s set designer (not kidding). What works with a bunch of Germans might be off-putting to middle Americans, don’t ya think?
So, I suggest that you get ready for the night. I have a way to help: drink copiously.
7:58 CST Al Gore, the Prophet, is offering incantations to Gaia and precedes the Savior. I’m watching on PBS. No one else, except maybe C-Span is covering it. I’ll translate for you (imagine the teacher’s voice from Peanuts): Wa, wa wuh wa, wah wa waaah. “An inconvenient truth, wa wa wa, Barack Obama, wa wa wa.” Afterward, the music Let the Sunshine is pure 60′s love child, earth-loving yumminess.
By the way, Fox already showed the ad of McCain congratulating Obama. I think it is good. It steals Obama’s thunder while making McCain look like he’s above politics. It is a historic night afterall. Never before in the history of America has such an untested potential president run. Historic. [Update: Shrewd.]
Scuttlebutt is that Pawlenty is the Republican Veep. Also, the rumors are like taking air from a balloon, slowly stealing the Democrat’s energy.
8:10 CST Eh, bored. Here’s the McCain ad. What do you think? Heh. Watching MSNBC (I’m almost tipsy, so forgive me, it’s entertaining), and Keith Olbermann just said,”We’ll be back, for the historic night, where Barack Obama will be nominated for President of the Democratic party.” Snort. That’s where it will stop, Keith. Here’s my prediction: McCain landslide. (Maybe I’m more buzzed than I think.)
8:24 CST Joe Biden is surprising the folks. His wife is pretty and looks like the perfect political wife, and sincere too. “This is what Democrats meant. An open convention.” The set behind Biden actually looks like the white house windows behind the speaker, in a tight shot. I think that’s what they were going for. That the person would look presidential. Biden is talking about how bad things are right now. “We’re here tonight for the next president of the United States, Barack Obama.” Is that why they’re there? It’s so interesting. It’s not to make America better. It’s to honor Barack Obama. And that might be the problem, here. This night feels “historic” and symbolic, but lacking in substance.
Weird vibe.
9:02 CST Barack Obama video. “In no other country on earth is my story even possible.” “It was his search for self that defined him.”–Narrator “I was more defined by my father’s absence. My grandparents lived in Kansas Grandfather worked in Patton’s army. Grandmother built bombers. Mom, got him up at 4:30 a.m. to do his studies. The only time his mom got really angry was when someone was bullied or treated differently.
In Chicago he would find a calling. There were factory closings. Lost jobs. Failing schools. In the people he met, he found answers. “Barack Obama is a killer. Barack Smith or Barry Obama. Not Barack Obama.”
“You read about some injustice and you think someone should do something about that.”
9:08 CST You have GOT to be kidding me. He was fighting for energy independence? Really back then?
Cute kids. Barack crying. The saddest moment of his life was when his mom died. “Life is short, better seize the moment.”
I think the video is doing a good job of humanizing him. But again, there’s nothing but his “caring” to demonstrate substance. He is formed by a single mother trying to raise kids while going through college. “Imagine what it’s like being in someone else’s shoes. We recognize ourselves in others.”
Soft, lilting music. “That’s the country I believe in. That’s what’s worth fighting for.”
Here he is. The man, the myth, the legend. Aw, the stage didn’t come from the bottom and rise. I’m disappointed. The crowd is going nuts. Music in the background. Sounds very Cold Playish. Don’t know what it is.
9:13 CST Michelle looks softer and more beautiful than I’ve seen her. Always stern and serious and nervous, though. Barack looks presidential. Navy suit and red striped tie. He looks great. Crowd is chanting.
9:15 CST “I accept your nomination for the President of the United States.” Crowd goes nuts. Honors Hillary Rodham Clinton, first. “An inspiration to my daughters and yours.” Next, he thanks Bill. He should. Bill gave him the six point bounce. He thanks Teddy K. Thanks Joe and gets a big white smile and a finger-point. Oh, Joe.
You know, in contrast to the Clintons, it’s nice to see Barack’s love for Michelle. It looks real. He looks real when he interacts with her and the kids. It’s the only time he feels real, actually, but it is his greatest real accomplishment. Which, in this day and age, is no small thing.
9:19 CST Oh, here we go. “Broken Washington and failed policies of George W. Bush. America, we are better than the last eight years.”
“Enough! This moment. This election. Is our chance to keep the American promise alive.”
9:22 CST Crowd chanting “Eight’s enough!” “Let there be no doubt that John McCain has worn the uniform with honor. Senator McCain talks about judgment. But what does it say about your judgment when you say Bush is right 90% of the time?” On issue after issue…..blah, blah, blah.
Obama is stepping in it. Obama can’t say issue after issue, because he hasn’t voted on many issues, and those that he has, are crazy liberal.
9:25 CST “I don’t think that John McCain doesn’t care. I just think he doesn’t know.” Oh bleh, he brings out the $5 million makes you rich thing. “John McCain doesn’t get it.” Old Republican philosophy “you are on your own. Even if you don’t own boots, you’re on your own.”
I’m listening to him blab about his mom, but he is not answer the central questions most people have about him. Nothing substantive about what he’s done or what he will do. It’s just more hope and changiness. “A promise to treat each other with respect. Business should create jobs. Government should do what we can’t do for ourselves. Our government should work for us, not against us. It should ensure opportunity for those willing to work. The fundamental belief that ‘I am my brother’s keeper’”
Now he’s going to spell it out, he says.
“Change means not honoring the tax code written by lobbyists.” What?
“Eliminate capital gains taxes for small businesses.” How and what qualifies as a small business?
“I will cut taxes for 95% of all working families.” (as opposed to the non-working families? wth?) Who? Who qualifies? I want numbers.
“Within 10 years I will eliminate our dependence on foreign oil. “
“I’ll invest 150 billion dollars in renewable energy that will create 5 million new jobs.” He will? With whose money?
9:37 CST “Teachers get paid more. Soldiers get an education.” Don’t we already have a GI Bill?
He will make sure that “insurance companies stop discriminating against the sick and need care the most.” Yep, with government controlled health care, everyone will suffer.
“Women will get paid equal pay for equal work.” Big claps. Everyone up. Pan to Michelle and the girls.
“Now, many of these plans will cost money. I’ll close corporate loopholes. [feeble clapping, weird] We cannot meet 21 century challenges with a 20th century bureaucracy.”
“Fathers must take responsibility to provide love and guidance to their children.” I wonder how Jesse Jackson feels about that.
9:43 “I will end the war responsibly. I will …tough diplomacy to deal with Iran and Russia. (Paraphrase) He’ll talk them to death. Oy vey.
“What I will not do, is suggest that the Senator takes his position for political purposes.” Now, he’s trying to lay the ground work to stop anyone from questioning his patriotism. He wants a pass. He knows this is where he is weak. He says he loves America.
“I’ve got news for you John McCain, we all put our country first.” Oh shut up! You are drawing attention to your weakness. You haven’t done squat and can’t compare to John McCain’s sacrifice, so don’t even try. And don’t fight it. Stick to your strengths, if you have them.
Uh and oh. Now, he’s going after the 2nd amendment. Big. Mistake. Talking about AK-47s in cities. Uh huh. People hear what he’s saying. Buy guns now, folks.
What gay person can’t visit the one they love in a hospital? Where? What bull sh*t!
9:51 “I don’t fit the typical pedigree, but I stand before you tonight, because in America, something is stirring. This election has never been about me. It’s about you.” That just rings hollow.
“One by one you’ve said Enough! to the politics of the past.”
“The change doesn’t come from Washington. It comes TO Washington.” American people demand it. “A new politics for a new time.” “The change we need is coming.”
9:54 “That promise is our greatest …” Now he’s invoking MLK and the Lincoln Memorial and the Mall. “In America our destiny is inextricably linked. ‘We cannot walk alone, the preacher cried.’ America, we cannot turn back. Not with so much work to be done.”
He’s waxing rhetorical now and actually quotes a scripture. Crowd is wild. Music is country. I don’t know country artists, so who is he?
9:59 Fireworks. Kids. Cuteness. Crowd is wild. Biden is blinding us again with his neon smile. Red, white and blue tape. Lots of people bawling in the audience. American flags waving.
I don’t know. Overall, I like Barack Obama. He has a nice family. He’s a great speaker. And yet, it feels hollow. Lots more fireworks. Huge display. I can feel the eyes of the world watching this spectacle in wonder and amazement. It is a great show. Impressive, really. Dramatic music. Ticker tape. Shining stars shooting across the sky. Everyone looking up in awe.
I get the sense that if everyone believes it enough, it can happen. I get the sense of an undercurrent of sadness. Isn’t that strange? I’ve said that there’s been a vibe that’s tough to pinpoint. Melancholy?
Maybe that this is the pinnacle? Maybe, that this is going to be the top moment? The last top moment? Yes, I think that’s it.
This show doesn’t feel like the beginning of anything, but the end.
When Rape Is Okay
Thursday, August 28th, 2008A strange confluence of events brought me around to the topic of rape. First, a reader had found my post on prison rape. The woman, Victoria Placeo was raped and her rapist was convicted, with his sentence reduced because of inmate overcrowding. Her response to a Houston Chronicle article discussing the problem of priso rape in some Texas prisons prompted this:
“OK….my first thought before reading the article was GOOD IF THEY ARE IN PRISON THEY DESERVE IT. That was the angry rape victim in me. I had the terror of recalling my incident and then thought no one deserves that.”
I think Victoria’s response typifies how most people feel. I also think that most people aren’t considering that it’s the weak, the white-collar criminal, the gang unaffiliated, the young, who are being preyed on by the rapists, molesters and murderers in prison. Logically, it’s not the big, mean guys being raped. it’s the lower guys in the pecking order being abused. The men inside of prison may have broken the law, but that does not justify the law being broken on them.
It doesn’t matter who is getting raped. It is wrong.
Prisoners should not be meeting out punishment to other criminals for crimes outside of the prison. Once prisoners are in the clink, a whole new society and set of rules comes to the fore, true enough. But criminals are not sent to prison to be abused. IF society deems that a person deserves to be raped for their crimes, then society should have the decency to make the punishment public.
So, for example, as much as Jeffery Dahmer’s crimes sickened me, and they did, I was not happy about hearing that he had died by being killed by a broom handle and bleeding to death while prison guards were in the bathroom. Justice would have been a public hanging. But Americans, or some Americans these days, are uncomfortable with seeing the consequences of crime. They’re all squirmy when it comes to owning their role as enforcer. So, they’ll prefer a brutal murder inside a prison to a public hanging where everyone could see what happens to filth who rape, murder, and torture.
On the same day I received the comment on the prison rape article, Cassy Fiano sent me this post about a celebrity blogger, What Would Tyler Durden Do? wishing rape on P. Diddy or whatever he goes by these days for wanting oil prices to go down so he can fly on his personal jet. Here’s Diddy’s contribution to the problem of oil prices:
“Your boy Diddy right now is on American Airlines. Look. Gas prices are too motherf*ckin high. I want to give a shout out to all my Saudi Arabian brothers and sisters and all my brothers and sisters from all the countries that have oil, if y’all could please send me some oil for my jet I would truly appreciate it. But right now, I am actually, can you believe it, I am actually flying commercial. That’s how high gas prices are ok, so I feel you. Look, I’m at the gate right now. This is really happening. This is proof that gas prices are too high, we need to do something about it, so tell whoever the next president is that we need to bring gas back down.”
Diddy isn’t going to win any awards for policy brilliance, but he’s a musician. He’s also a pampered celeb who, and I’m just taking a stab at this here, doesn’t quite get real suffering. Who gives a flip? If you’re an environmental, leftist celebrity blog wacko, you do. And Tyler Durden (playing on the whole “What would Jesus do”) has his own form of rough justice:
“The fact that this jackass hasn’t been raped by a bear with AIDS is how you know hubris and karma are just fairytales.”
Where is the love? Where is the mercy? These are the same people who will donate to the ACLU and protest the death penalty, but that’s all fine in theory. But for people who break moral laws near and dear to their hearts, like say, loving cheap fossil fuel so you don’t have to suffer the indignity of flying commercial (and it is an indignity), well, that person deserves rape and AIDS.
Rape is never okay, no matter who is doing it. Fantasizing about an ideological enemy getting raped isn’t cool, either. Turning the other way, at the problem of prison rape makes America a more uncivilized and brutal place. Prison rape is the definition of cruel and unusual punishment. It is not funny. It is not deserved. It is not justice.
If Americans want to sanction this behavior, then they should be willing to bring it out of the prison kitchens and closets. Justice should be public. It should represent the will of the people. It’s time to bring back public hangings, if only to bring back the public conscience.
Best McCain Ad
Thursday, August 28th, 2008Keep in mind that I’m not a huge McCain fan. I’m voting for him for the very reasons elucidated in this advertisement. Obama’s inexperience in the face of these world crises and his moral ambivalence in the face of tyrants adds up to such a troubling picture.
H/T Instapundit … Ann Althouse calls the ad “devastating“. I agree. This argument is what nags at the back of every American, including the Democrats soaking it all in in Denver. Ed Morrissey says:
“Presidential candidates get lots of criticism about policy stances during primaries that can be replayed as negative ads by their opponents. This, however, is different. It underscores Obama’s unreadiness, his unqualified status to assume the highest office in the country — and Obama himself makes that case.”
How Influential Is Black Liberation Theology On The Obamas?
Thursday, August 28th, 2008This video is making the rounds. It is longish at around 13 minutes, but goes into the roots of black liberation theology a bit. I’m going to do another post here soon about the whole notion of race and diversity, but I’ll be interested in your feedback about this video first.

Healthcare For All: Five Reasons Government Controlled Medicine Would Be Bad
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008As I watch Dennis Kucinich jump around the stage and scream for “health care for all!” and then claim that his views are mainstream while Bill O’Reilly listens amused, I wonder just how mainstream universal, aka government controlled, health care actually is to average Americans. Good look finding hard data. Government controlled health care sounds good in theory, but it’s terrible in reality. How do we know? Let me count the ways:
1. People would lose jobs. The very people who would stand to benefit from health care would be in trouble, because what’s the plan to pay for these grandiose policies? Small businesses will pay. And how will they offset those costs? Hire less people. The people who need jobs will lose jobs.
2. It would be outrageously expensive. Beyond the cost to employers, there will be costs to American taxpayers. Someone is paying for this mess. A good analysis is here.
3. It would create more government bureaucracy. Can anyone argue that the government makes anything better? Just think IRS. Now imagine a bureaucrat deciding your health care coverage. It should send shivers down your spine.
4. Patient care suffers. Ultimately, this is about what is best for patients, right? One only has to look to countries doing what universal health care types desire to see that between waiting for procedures, being lied to about care choices, etc., government controlled health care is bad for your health.
5. Government involvement stifles innovation. America leads the world in cutting-edge technology and patient care. The innovation draws patients in dire straits who benefit from socialized medicine world powerhouses–Canadians, Britons, French, etc. Still, they come to America to get prompt, excellent, cutting-edge treatment. Will the government improve upon the efforts of the private sector where the innovation happens. Doubtful.
Liveblogging Biden at the DNC
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008No, I’m not drug-addled and crazy. I want to see what he has to say.
“Delaware can get another Senator, but my boys can’t get another father.” Biden’s son is making a strong personal case for his father. Something no one has yet been able to do for Obama, I notice.
Applause not as loud as for Bill Clinton, but the crowd is approving of Joe Biden. Michelle Obama is unrelentingly serious. His wife Jill leaves him “breathless and speechless at the same time.”
Now, Biden is paying homage to the Clintons. Feeble applause for his pride in “soldiers who serve this country”. Come on Dems, convince us of your patriotism!
9:35 He’s talking about shared history with Barack Obama. “Giving up is unforgivable.”
My mother’s creed is the American creed. Live our faith and treasure our families. Everyone can make it, if they try hard enough.”
“That American dream feels like it’s slipping away. I have never seen a time where Washington has seen so many people get knocked down and do nothing to help them get back up.”
9:39 “That’s what we’ll get if Geo…I mean [Freudian slip, Freudian slip] John McCain is elected.”….. “John McCain doesn’t seem to get it. Barack Obama gets it. He chose to go to the southside of Chicago…. He could have gone anywhere. He made Chicagoans lives his life.”
Well, Biden is trying to do what no one has been able to do, including Obama’s wife, Michelle. He’s trying to make Obama seem human. But, man. 150 people now have insurance who didn’t before? That’s it? That’s the sum of Obama’s contribution?
9:44 Now, Biden goes after McCain. “No relief for 100 million American families.” That seems like a big number. “John’s the same! More of the same!”
This is what the theme will be. John is the same old thing. Barack Obama is a change.
Ooof: “We don’t need a good soldier, we need a wise leader.”
How about both? A good soldier and a good leader? They aren’t mutually exclusive, except for these folks.
Well, this is refreshing. Barack and Biden will support Georgia, huh? Does that mean that Barack Obama is willing to have American troops fight and die against Russian troops?
9:54 “The greatest presidents have encouraged us to embrace change.” He puts Obama in the same category as Lincoln and Kennedy. Hmmmm….
“We’re ready! America is ready! This is HIS time. This is our time. This is America’s time.”
Barack Obama is in da house! Crowd is wild. No words yet. Michelle Obama looking like an emotional wreck still.
Uh oh, he’s off the teleprompter. “If I’m not mistaken, Hillary Clinton rocked the house last night.” Bland smiles from the Clintons. Huge applause, though. “President Clinton reminds us what its like when you put the American people first.”
9:58 Now, Obama is explaining why he’s having the glory stage. He wants everyone to “join the party”.
Musack courtesy Bruce Springsteen.
Ma Biden proud. Michelle Obama beaming, finally. Biden family is a good looking bunch.
10:01 Sister Sledge: We are family. I can’t hear this without picturing Gene Hackman in drag. Free association–Joe Biden in drag. Oy vey. See where my mind goes?
It’s probably time to quit now.
Liveblogging Bill Clinton’s DNC Speech
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008If you wondered if I was truly a masochist, my willingness to liveblog Bill Clinton’s DNC speech should remove all doubt. So here I sit. Come back for highlights, ya’ll!
8:03 “Don’t stop believing”. They love him. Why does Hillary look constipated? She really, really doesn’t like her husband.
8:05 The love won’t stop. Look at all the American flags! Democrats are patriotic. “We got to get on with the show here, come on!”
“I am here first, to support Barack Obama. And second, [pan to Michelle Obama who gives that a standing "O"] I’m here to warm up the crowd for Joe Biden. I love Joe Biden.”
“Hillary will do everything to get Barack Obama elected. And I will do everything in my power to get Barack Obama elected. [Big pause] And 18 million of you will help get him elected, too.”
Bill’s proud of the campaign Hillary won. Hillary is teary eyed. These people are insane. What actors they are!
I’ll say this, Bill Clinton is, by far, the best speaker so far. He knows how to work an audience and he knows how to sound specific without saying anything specific. “Barack has the remarkable ability to rally people to high hopes.” Now, he lists Barack’s strengths. Strange, not much applause. “The long, hard primary, strengthened him.”
Interesting. He notes that with Biden, Barack Obama will have the foreign policy knowledge he needs. The implication is that Obama himself can’t do it, but with Biden, he can. “Barack Obama is ready to be president of the United States.” Does saying this help Obama? Isn’t it implied? Does it need to be said?
8:16 Michelle Obama looks terrified. Is she out of her league? Or is she just frightened about what might come out of Clinton’s mouth next?
Money quote: “People around the world have always been more impressed with the power of our example, than the example of our power.”
Here comes the red meat. Lays out the ways the Republicans have screwed up–health care, income inequality, Katrina and cronyism, ……”but we have to elect Barack Obama first.”
8:21 Bill Clinton is a master. He is gutting the Republican Congress and White House together. He’s attaching McCain masterfully to Bush and the Republicans. And it rings…true.
“In this case, the third time, is NOT the charm.”
8:24 “Barack Obama is on the right side of history.” Bill is saying what Obama cannot bring himself to say–Barack Obama is living the American dream.
“If like me, you believe that America should be a place called hope. Then …..elect Barack Obama.”
Wow. Well, Obama should get a bounce from this. But I don’t know, honestly, how Obama can do better than this. In fact, I’m quite sure he can’t.
Notes: I think this was a good speech. It was empty, really, and inaccurate all over the place about the Republicans, but that wasn’t the point. The point was that Obama would be better as Prez than McCain.
However, here’s where I think this speech hurts Obama: Obama cannot compete rhetorically. Bill Clinton’s timing, charm, and ability to work a crowd is really unparalleled. And Bill hit a home run. How will Biden and Obama compete? I don’t know that they can. Again, the two most energetic people so far (who aren’t complete crazies ala Kucinich) have the names Clinton.
Joe Biden: Happiest Guy This Campaign Season
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008
You can’t hate him. He’ll say something embarrassingly stupid, but you can’t hate him. Joe Biden is the guy at the bar, a combination of obtuse know-it-all Cliff Claven and the former high school jock who got by with his winning smile but usually lost the big game. He has great stories about the old days, though.
Biden knows, as no one else does, that he’s hit life’s lottery being the vice-presidential candidate to Barack Obama. He’s been around long enough to also know that this isn’t really going to happen, but if, by some lucky chance, it does, he’s in a nice position.
My husband mentioned that even though Biden babbles like a buffoon, gives overly-enthusiastic and inappropriate hugs and grins like an idiot at all the wrong times, he just can’t hate Biden. Biden reminds me of Jack Nicholson. He loves the camera. He loves the attention. He knows it’s transient. He’s far exceeded his own expectations for his life. Hell, he’s old. It could be over any time.
So when he exclaims, without irony:
“Wasn’t that the most incredible speech you ever heard,” Biden, who addresses the convention on Wednesday, a day before Barack Obama steps to the podium, told a breakfast meeting of convention delegates from Biden’s home state of Delaware.
“Mark my words,” Biden said.
“When this convention is over and three to four years from now they are commenting on why the Democrats won, they are going back and say the single most significant event that occurred at the Democratic convention is Michelle Obama — not Barack Obama, not Joe Biden, not Ted Kennedy — but Michelle Obama’s speech.”
Snort. Of course, Michelle and Barack Obama are the smartest people, ever, ever, ever! They picked meeeeeeee! Wheeeeee! I’m the luckiest guy in the world! And the smartest! And the all-around bestest! And finally, someone sees the awesomeness too! And the fact that Barack Obama sees my awesomeness makes him superfantastically awesome!
Joe Biden has injected childlike glee into this campaign. And for that, I like him. He’s an old guy, he’s been around, and he knows when he’s taking the ride of his life. Who can blame him for putting the top down and letting the wind blow through his hair plugs?

What Concerned Family Members Do
Wednesday, August 27th, 2008You’ve probably heard this happy story, but since they seem to be so few and far between, I’ll share it too:
Pennell, a waitress at Hannah’s Bar-B-Que in Lenoir, N.C., had left her job shortly before 10 p.m. last Wednesday. Before heading home, about 20 miles away, she stopped at a Wal-Mart to purchase birthday materials and home supplies. She made a call to Mitchell to see if he needed anything and left, the store’s surveillance camera recording her departure at 10:14 p.m.
Pennell then made a stop for gas at a station at 10:26, according to authorities, but that was her last recorded activity. Just after midnight, her husband reported her missing. A search, in earnest, would be launched the next day.
Although a K-9 team searched around her house, police officials mostly believed from the outset that Pennell’s car had gone off Route 321 — which would prove to be a great challenge for searchers because of long stretches of thick brush covering deep ravines.
Five days later, she was found:
“It was something we all wanted. We were praying for an outcome like this, and for it to become a reality — that was a blessing for all of us.”
Road to recovery
Pennell is now recovering at the Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, having suffered a skull fracture and other traumas as well as dehydration and hypothermia. As of Tuesday night, she was still listed in critical condition.“She’s doing good, considering the situation,” Mitchell said.
In contrast, guys who kill their wives don’t call the police and mothers who kill their kids don’t report their children missing for over 30 days.
People always say, “Well, you don’t know what you’d do if you were that stressed.” Um, I think you do. You’d go crazy trying to find that child or wife or husband. That’s what you’d do. And you most certainly report the person missing right away.
