Has it occured to anyone that maybe, just maybe, we need to get off the f'in imported oil? I used to be anti-nuke until I realized that the politics of oil have killed far more people than any nuke plant ever did, including Chernobyl. The technology is far safer now, and there are even plans for "mini -reactors" that have sophisticated auto shutdown logic controllers in them. Use these to generate the electricity, convert mass transit to all electric and use the remaining domestic oil production to satisfy needs until we can wean ourselves off of this 130 year old technology. Do you realize that we are essentially driving the same technology that was available in 1910? Sure, it's faster, quieter, safer, etc., but the underlying principle is the same, and frankly the average corporate fuel economy isn't any better than the old model T's. Want to go tell Russia, Venezuela, Iran, et al to f**k off? Get off the oil, and they will beg us to do business with them. I for one could live with the nuke power and maybe even some temporary increase in domestic oil production if we could move ahead with other technology and eventually tell these bastards to F-off. OK, I'm done now...
