Clinging To Their Guns

March 2, 2009 / 9:23 am • By Dr. Melissa Clouthier

I heard a woman over the weekend say,”I’ve always clung to my religion. Now I cling to my guns, too.” Clearly, she’s not alone in her gun (and ammo) clinging. Says Confederate Yankee:

Many people are buying significant amounts of ammunition for their personal supply, from thousands to tens of thousands of rounds each, to one person who claims to have built a stockpile over the past decade of three-quarters of a million rounds that seems to fantastic to believe.

Most claim they are building a reserve in anticipation of ammunition prices continuing to rise. Another significant component are buying ammunition as a hedge against uncertain times, both as an investment, and as security measure.

But an increasing number of people are openly expressing that the reason they are stocking up on ammunition is that they fear the actions of our federal government. These are people who have never been radicals, most could generally care less about politics, and many have never even dreamed of owning guns until now.

I’ve never owned a gun. Going through the hurricanes unarmed frightened me and I’ve just been lazy about doing something. It’s been on my mind, though. I’m one of those people who never thought about having a gun. Well, the idea that the government is working toward limiting my freedom makes me feel rebellious. It also scares me more than a little. The Obama administration’s actions are not about safety, they’re about power and control. The government has enough of both. To arms!

I’m one of those people who never thought about having a gun.

So am I. But the thing is, once the dollar collapses police, fire fighters, medical providers, et al (like the rest of us) will understandably be taking care of their own families. ’911′ finally will be a joke and our safety will be subject to the whims of mob behavior.

I did not think about owning a gun until my wife and I began to contemplate having kids. This would seem counter intuitive to a Liberal, but for me it made perfect sense. I have never had a problem thinking that if someone broke into my house, I would fight them off best I could and if I die trying, oh well. Well, with a child, my thoughts changed significantly. Now my thought is, I need enough firepower to end any threat to my family, period. I don’t worry about my child getting hurt by my gun because I will protect and train her.

911 is already a joke. The response times are realistic (I am sure some people would think I would say “too long,” but they aren’t). To think that dialing 911 would bring an emergency responder within a time limit needed to save a life in imminent danger is naive.

Maybe if your house is on fire, the firemen will get there in time to keep the fire from spreading to your neighbor. Maybe if you are in a car accident and you are trapped in your car with a broken leg. Maybe if your ex-spouse threatens your safety in a phone call. Someone kicking in your door to rob you? Someone attacking a woman in a parking garage? Someone carjacking you with your child in a car seat in the back of your SUV?

I would rather count on myself than count on someone that is at least 7-10 minutes away.

As one who fully supports the natural right of revolution (see Declaration of Independence) as the real reason for the Second Amendment, arming and stockpiling are not to be engaged in lightly. It is not something that you can do flippantly or spitefully. It is serious business, deadly serious business.

Number one rule – gun safety. And one of the number one rules of gun safety is NEVER point a gun at someone unless you are prepared to shoot. It is not a game.

And it seems to me, before one buys up a bunch of ammunition because of fear of the government, they should ask themselves: Are you prepared to use it?

Arming and stockpiling ammunition is deadly serious business. And they should treat it that way. If you are not asking yourself the serious questions, you should not be engaging in it.

Rational people anticipate the Dems assault on the 2nd ammendment and purchasing guns and ammo is the logical reaction.

The Dems dont respect our constitution when they disagree and instead of ammending it they just interprete it to mean what they want. Facism with a happy face is what we face.

I don’t see well enough to shoot a gun, unfortunately, although if I did, I’d cling to it.
I guess I’m reduced to clinging to my big butcher knife and huge golf club.
