The Obligatory Obama Special Olympics Post–UPDATED

March 20, 2009 / 8:50 am • By Dr. Melissa Clouthier

I have a special needs child. He looks like you’d imagine a special needs child looks when he throws a ball. He looks like you’d imagine a special needs child looks when he catches a ball. He looks like you’d imagine a special needs child looks when he runs. He looks like you’d imagine a special needs child looks when he bowls. He rode the short bus for a while.

Sounds hilarious doesn’t it? You know, running, throwing, bowling awkwardly because of muscle imbalances and fear of falling and fear of being hit by the ball. What’s amazing is that his Little League teammates haven’t laughed or poked fun. Not. Once. They have managed to show more class, patience, empathy and charity than the President of the United States, but that’s turning out to be no big feat.

Last night, Barack Obama joked with Jay Leno that it’s like “watching Special Olympics” to watch him bowl:

Hilarious.

The joke doesn’t bother me so much, though. It’s just more evidence that our President is a small man. This is the man who talked about Jessica Simpson’s weight gain. This is the man who gave unworkable DVDs to our staunchest ally as a gift. This is the man who slyly flipped off John McCain and his current Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Speaking of Hillary… This is the administration who gave a mis-translated red button to the Russians saying “reset”. Do they not realize that by diminishing the past administration and making fun of it at every turn they undermine their own power and respect?

They have no respect for the offices or the power or authority they hold. None.

So, the President of the United States will go on late night talk-shows. It is beneath the office but since he has no respect for the office, it’s impossible to tear it down. Bookworm says:

The President, of course, said he didn’t mean to offend anyone, and I believe it. Nasty just rolls off him naturally, without any effort on his part. He’s done this offensive trash talk before. Remember how you condescendingly told Hillary she was “nice enough?” Or how about his offering that “I’ll put Mr. Burgess up against Sean Hannity. They’ll tear him up.” That’s not presidential. That’s school yard talk, and school yard talk from the kid who isn’t nice. Popular, maybe. But nice? Definitely not.

Now, to the guts of the Politically Correct nonsense. Imagine a Republican had said something similar. Remember “Macaca”? Yeah, the career of a good man was buried because of a verbal slip such as Obama’s last night. Those on the right are outraged, but is the Left? No, they figure you should “get a sense of humor“, you know, because making fun of ‘tards is funny.

UPDATED with more from The Anchoress (go to her site, she has loads of links to the Left’s gaffes–she has a long memory and better search functions than me, I think):

Perhaps President Obama, who received a rather tidy Book Advance just before he was sworn in, (does anyone else remember how Newt Gingrich got castigated for ‘using his office to sell a book’?) should donate some of the proceeds of his advance, say…I dunno, 90% – to the Special Olympics, to show he doesn’t really think that it’s okay to joke about “extra chromosome people” like Al Gore did (yes, I remember everything). Or, at least, that he should not insult disabled people by comparing them to himself, or to political junkies, in general.

As a political junkie, I can say that.

Sigh. One almost gets tired of saying it, but one must say it, still: Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would do with that, had Bush said it. Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done with the Irish PM Teleprompter gaffe (the press has helpfully embargoed the video, so Obama doesn’t have to see it playing 24/7, as Bush would have – had Bush so gaffed). Can you IMAGINE what the press and the Dems would have done if Bush had given the Prime Minister of Great Britain a lousy pack of 50 “Classic” DVD’s that didn’t work in the UK?

The Leftists in this country, once again reveal their hypocrisy. They want to control your language but when their beloved makes stupid gaffe after stupid gaffe and reveals his lack of character, it’s funny, not pathetic.

The fact is, the Left in our country don’t mind stooping to sexism (Sarah Palin), racism (Michelle Malkin, Michael Steele), religion (Gun-clingers, Joe Lieberman), classism (Joe the Plumber, any American not Democrat), etc. when it suits them. But they’ll turn like vicious hyenas on anyone who say, does, or thinks something outside what they decide is politically correct.

Meanwhile, the Right believes in free speech. So those on the Right feel that if the President wants to make an ass of himself, he’s welcome to do so. Is it offensive? Sure. It isn’t much different than shock jock Howard Stern’s sexist jokes or the unfunny and leftist darling Don Imus’ saying “nappy headed hoes“. Listen or don’t, it’s up to you.

So the Right tends to roll their eyes at the un-p.c. shenanigans of the Left. It’s hypocritical, we tell ourselves, to believe in free speech and then admonishing someone on the left for exercising that right and revealing himself to be a jerk. That time is over. I call bullshit. The Left can start following their own rules or embrace free speech again. It’s their choice, but they can’t get away with this double-standard any more.

Back to Barack and bowling: Would I like the President of the United States to have some measure of decorum? Sure. That would be nice. It’s not going to happen with Barack Obama. And his hate speech (come on, you know if a Republican said this it would be called hate speech) represents a very nasty character flaw and deep insecurity. But anyone paying attention before the election would have seen that too.

President Barack Obama diminishes himself, the office and the country. It’s embarrassing. But you know, Americans choose presidents who, for better or worse, represent themselves. He fits right in to the base, crass culture. Far from being better or smarter, like we were told during the election, he’s baser and cruder. It’s interesting watching so many try to defend the indefensible.

UPDATED:

And for classy contrast:

Michael Goldfarb says, “Right now President Palin is sounding pretty good, and it’s not like she couldn’t have figured out how to print money, drive the stock market down, or fill out an NCAA bracket. Also, Andrew Sullivan might want to do some shoe-leather reporting on this but the way Piper is doting on Trig, it seems awfully maternal.”

What’s really funny is that at this point I’d rather have any Special Olympian as President over Obama.

Even if all they had to do was to read off a teleprompter – oh, wait….

  • http://www.redstate.com/cindermutha/ Carola

I also have a child with special needs and NerObama made me cringe. Doesn’t he have a job to do? On the other hand, do we really want him to his job since he’s not doing that very well either.

    This is a brilliant post.

  • Mr. Chuckles

Funny, I wonder if there was this much outrage from you when Cheney told Leahy to “fuck off” (wonderful, inspiring leadership by the way) on the senate floor, or when Lush Rimjob used to call Chelsea Clinton ugly (BTW Rush, who takes the better picture now fatass?), or when Barbara Bush said that “these people are all better off anyway (would that include better off dead too you dumb cow?), or when Coulter called Edwards a faggot, or when Limpbaugh repeatedly played the “Magic Negro” song, etc, etc. Stings a little when you or someone you love gets insulted, doesn’t it doc? I will give you all this though, that was a STUPID thing for him to say, and yes he needs to apologize repeatedly. I would hope that you keep this in mind when your team pulls the same shit though.

  • http://technicalities.mu.nu Teresa

I’m reading the above comment and trying desperately to remember when Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, or Barbara Bush were President of the United States. Not pundits, not FORMER First Ladies, but sitting Presidents.

Help me out here people. I must have missed a few years because I am not recalling this at all.

For that matter Dick Cheney was not President when his comment was brought to the national media’s attention. But then again maybe I missed that too.

All these Presidents I just blinked and missed. Or have I been in an alternate universe all this time.

  • Mr. Chuckles

Point taken, Teresa, however Cheney was perhaps the most powerful VP in US history, and set policy for this country in a way that no VP has done before. Like it or not, when Limbaugh can influence the actions and leadership of the repub party, he is it’s de facto leader. Coulter also wields powerful influence with the hyper-conservative crowd. And if I were a former first lady, I would at least make an attempt to think about what I said before I opened my mouth. She’s probably just insane, but really, what a stupid thing to say. In any case, several of the people that I listed have just as much, if not more influence than our newbie president and they continually screech offensive things to an eager public that thrives on hate. No Teresa, they’re not presidents, but they have just as much if not more influence on our culture than BO.

  • http://melissaclouthier.com Dr. Melissa Clouthier

    Chuckles,

It’s the Left who seeks political correctness. Those on the Right believe in free speech–even speech that makes you seem like an ass.

So, while Rush and Ann Coulter’s humor is edgy, they’re entertainers and you’re free to turn the channel. I don’t watch Bill Maher for that reason–he’s a bigot.

Was Dick Cheney telling someone to “fuck off” on the Senate floor distasteful? Sure. Did he go on Prime Time television to broadcast his intemperate words? No.

Further, it’s the Left who is all sensitive-like and worried about PC and yet has no problem using personal invective and reduced to using sexist terms (I have been the recipient many times of sexist rants and it’s come from the Left not the right. Interestingly, I asked Jane Hamsher if she ever received sexist degrading talk and she said no. Wow. I wonder why. Maybe it’s because men on the Right show more restraint?).

Finally, this is the President. What is doing on a talk show? Proving that he’s “common”? Well, it’s been proven.

  • Mr. Chuckles

    Doc,

Calling someone a faggot or doing the Jim Crow “Magic Negro” dance is not “edgy” humor, it’s just degrading. I am in agreement with you about BO’s comment – also degrading and worthy of a national apology. However, you could have also easily turned the channel. I occasionally listen to Rush just to see what effect the oxycontin is having that day, and when I’ve had enough I turn it off.

Frankly, I think it was poor judgement for BO to be on a late night talk show to begin with -not very presidential.

“Those on the right believe in free speech…” Heh. Tell that to the RNC protesters in their “free speech zones”. Tell that to whom Ari Fleischer directed his remarks. Tell that to the McCain protesters who were attacked (yes, there’s plenty of video) when they were peacefully protesting his campaign stops. Sorry Doc, there’s plenty of censorship to go around. The left is not the only entity with a lock on nullifying free speech.

I expect an apology from BO on behalf of those he offended. He’s the president, and he sure wasn’t very presidential. I’m not trying to kiss your ass here – free speech or not it was a stupid thing to say and I will be dissapointed if he does not at least make an attempt to apologize. I am trying to get you to recognize however that much of the vitriol coming from the right is a big steaming pile of offensive crap too. There’s a great deal of conservative silence when these “entertainers” speak, and that’s a problem for the rest of us who are trying to seek some common ground.

  • http://blahgwrite.blogspot.com Mat

    Ah,

So Chucknut pulls the “you can always turn the channel” comment. Kinda funny that it only applies to us crude conservatives. But apparently the Chosen One gets a free pass even with this crap because the liberal bloggers and media pundits are clamoring that it only makes him human to make these comments.

Chucknut, I think it’s high time that you get out from under the President’s desk, if you know what I mean (nudge, nudge, wink, wink). Your Messiah doesn’t need yet another embarrassing scandal…

Oh, BTW, I work at a private university so I don’t get those awesome government bonuses that you accuse me of. At least I wouldn’t get them in the job I’m in. But thanks anyway and keep trying to make sense. Someday you will…

  • Mr. Chuckles

    Mat,

Apparently you went to the school of “if I repeat a lie long enough people will believe it”. As I said, Obama’s comment was out of line. Try reading and actually understanding the posts you critique (you know, with that brilliant intellect of yours…) before you comment. I actually do turn off Hannity, Rush, etc., and also Mike Malloy and Randi when they go all extremist like your conservative heroes. Try the “off” button on your remote, Mat – no one is making you watch the vast left wing conspiratorial media. Frankly, I hardly tune in to any media anymore as it’s all biased.

It always amazes me how people will assume that they have all of the answers. I guess those of us who disagree with you on the 10% of issues that divide us are Obama dicksuckers (your words, not mine)… With us or against, eh Mat? That’s cool – I’ll go for against then. If middle of the road bothers you “big tent” conservatives then maybe it’s time for the 60% of America that hates both parties to 86 the rest of you on both sides. You can have Idaho and Texas – I hear they recently have temples built in the shape of Rush’s ass for you to kiss (Michael Steele is already a member). As far as your riotously funny cocksucking comment let’s just say you’re just another typical internet tough guy who wouldn’t have the balls to say to me in person what you posted above.

You work at a private university. Right. At least that’s what you say here. I don’t buy it. You sound too much like all of the other disgruntled little “gummint” worker bees that I’ve met in my life.

But let’s say you are being truthful. You still hate the student employees who’s very existence gives you a job. Even worse, if the school is private, presumably their parents or they themselves are shelling out big bucks only to have spiteful little desk jockeys like yourself make smarmy little comments about their beliefs on the web. Good thing for you one of my kids is not at your little private retreat. Of course being a graduate of a public university and a middle class schmuck I probably couldn’t afford to send my kids to your little elitist “pay for my degree” school anyway.

Well, you’re getting your info somewhere…my guess is that it’s a liberal rag. Yes, you did say Obama’s comment was out of line, and then you added the “but.” Honestly, I don’t understand how Cheney telling someone to fuck off equates with making fun of Special Olympics people, but liberal logic has never been particularly, well, logical. By the way, I’m sure most people have made offhand “retard” jokes in their life (I have and admit it), but someone who’s the President shouldn’t be doing it. It’s not so much degrading (which everyone has done to someone at least once in their lives whereever they are at any point in history) as there are things that a President doesn’t do. As far as the “vast left wing” nonsense, it’s all around me every day. I wish that I could turn it off.

“It always amazes me how people will assume that they have all of the answers. I guess those of us who disagree with you on the 10% of issues that divide us are Obama dicksuckers (your words, not mine)… With us or against, eh Mat? That’s cool – I’ll go for against then.”

Oh, and you never act like you have all the answers. That’s all I ever see you print on this site. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black. 10%? Try 100%, since you lean so far to the left (though you won’t admit it).

“If middle of the road bothers you “big tent” conservatives then maybe it’s time for the 60% of America that hates both parties to 86 the rest of you on both sides. You can have Idaho and Texas – I hear they recently have temples built in the shape of Rush’s ass for you to kiss (Michael Steele is already a member).”

The country’s moving to the extremes. Events in the world have dictated a move in those directions. It wasn’t my choice. Middle of the road will kill this country in the end. It’s called long-term thinking. You should try looking into it sometime. The 60% of those who hate both parties generally have their head so far up their ass that they can’t tell them apart. It’s called fence-sitting and cluelessness. As for Rush, I do listen to him every now and then, but not all the time, nor do I worship him (I don’t even have his newsletter). Given the way things are going in most other states, I’d love to move to Idaho.

“As far as your riotously funny cocksucking comment let’s just say you’re just another typical internet tough guy who wouldn’t have the balls to say to me in person what you posted above.”

Perhaps. It’s entirely possible. Physical showdowns are never mathematical conclusions (look at Vietnam). But it was anchored in truth. You’re one of those who has a hard on for Obama and have defended him tooth and nail for the past several months on this site. Hence the analogy.

“You work at a private university. Right. At least that’s what you say here. I don’t buy it. You sound too much like all of the other disgruntled little ‘gummint’ worker bees that I’ve met in my life.

Of course being a graduate of a public university and a middle class schmuck I probably couldn’t afford to send my kids to your little elitist ‘pay for my degree’ school anyway.”

Of course I don’t like the students that much. They’re all a bunch of leftist know-it-alls who have no conception of the price that they’ll pay long after the Messiah’s out of office. What’s wrong with that? You’ve never, ever done that? Please…

As for insulting my university, no skin off my ass. I personally think that they’re two-faced and phony most of the time and given the economic condition at this time, I’m glad that I actually have a job, so no complaints. As for the people shelling out the big bucks, well most of them are pretty well-to-do, so if they want to waste money, who am I to complain? However, I do like my job. No, I don’t get huge amounts of money, but it does pay the bills and it’s not really all that demanding. As for being smarmy, I come from a middle class family and paid for my education through loans (which I’m still paying for), so I’m not really sure where you’re going with that.

Oh, I see. I’m conservative, so naturally I’m loaded (or at least my family is) and I’m stupid. That isn’t the first time a liberal makes a silly assumption, and I’m sure it won’t be the last.

I do wonder at times if you’d be happier if you went over to DailyKos or HuffPo and join the conversations there. It’d obviously be more up your alley…

Great post, Melissa. I have a child with epilepsy, so I waiting with baited breath for his snide comment about “drop and flop”. It will come; just wait for it.

You can always tell when a post is spot on, because the BusHitlerBots come out of the woodwork.

I wonder how anyone could equate one able adult telling another able adult to f-off (which is the stock in trade of the left) with bashing innocent people who aren’t capable of fighting back.
Oh, right, that’s leftist philosophy–the divine right of kings to rule us poor lesser mortals. I do believe that Obama didn’t mean to offend anyone; he simply doesn’t care whether the inferior beings on this planet are offended or not. However that, “I didn’t mean to offend” is an offensive comment in itself. It assumes that the recipients of such contempt are to stupid to react. When they do, it is enough to say, “I didn’t mean to offend you,” when what true contrition would say is, “I said something that was way out of line. I shouldn’t have; it was not an accurate remark, and I take it back.”

Lefties never take anything back. They’re just sorry the idiots who have enough life in them to be offended have actually stood up and reacted.

  • LEARNED FOREVER

I want this president, vice-president, sec of state, millions of appointed, “czars of whatever…”, to go down in a massive fireball. The great thing is: these people brought the matches&gasoline. Watching the MSM try to hide this administrations, ineptitude, buffoonery, complete incompetence, has been pure enjoyment. They think they can do this for, 4, long, torcherous, years? The Harmonic Convergence has finally arrived!!! This is Liberal Paradise!!!

This isn’t Katrina-esque, as some have suggested — its
Waterloo — for the Bambi, the Democrats, the old world media. Look at it this way: like a polio, or flu shot. It hurts for awhile, but in the long run, builds our bodies defenses. I believe, the country will emerge, better than before.
