The Government Bans Books

March 25, 2009 / 2:16 pm • By Dr. Melissa Clouthier

“Despite not one case of a child being harmed by lead in books, all books published before 1984 cannot be sold, distributed or given away.”

Selling a book made before 1984 (when ink might have lead in it) can garner a $100,000 fine.

I think my local library’s in trouble.

I’m actually a collector of old children’s books, and I guess if you are a collector you’re safe–for now.

Books are only one subset of the product types affected by this law. Toy manufacturers & retailers, clothing manufacturers, sporting goods companies, homecrafters–all are being badly hurt.

There is a rally scheduled in DC on April 1 to inform Congress about the harm they have done thru this irresponsible legislation. More about the CPSIA and a link to rally information here.

My husband and I have saved so many books from our childhood, which I assure you was well before 1984. It has been one of our greatest pleasures to watch our son enjoying those same books. I guess now we must be engaging in some kind of child abuse.

I am really worried about libraries. A lot of great children’s literature is well over 25 years old. Are kids going to be stuck with today’s dumbed down books because old books are against the law?

Conveniently gets rid of all the books not written by the Left, doesn’t it?

Got to make way for all that Obama propaganda.

Uh oh… better not tell Half Price Books about this law. They’ll be out of business.
