My “global” view of that interesting map discerns 3 macro-regions: Pop=North; Coke=South; Soda=Coasts(both).

I’m originally from NY (drank soda there); lived 20 years in NM, and now living in NC, where Coke has always been my choice.

I can remember when I first moved to New Orleans. The following was a conversation I witnessed:
Waitress: What would you like to drink
    Friend: Coke
    Waitress: What kind?
    Friend: Dr Pepper
    Me: Huh???

Don’t get all bent out of shape, Bender. It’s neither. Coke’s the one (at least in the South).

Yep – “What kinda Coke do you want?” is a perfectly acceptable way of ascertaining what carbonated cola-style beverage a person desires. :)
