I’m afraid I can’t recommend “Dune.”
I admit I liked it when I was a teenager, but as an adult I find it superficial. Not to mention the fact that the sequels are awful. Herbert did not know how to create a convincing female character, and wasted the characters he did create.

I wasn’t impressed with Charlotte’s Web, either. However, I would like to recommend “The Hundred Dresses,” by Eleanor Estes–yes, even for boys, if you can coax them to read it. It’s a story about school teasing, and how we mistreat others unknowingly.

Gotta wonder at Melissa’s list. It seems to be mostly books that you would read before you turn 10.
Atlas Shrugged, though, is real good if you spend a lot of time marooned somewhere and have a high-fiber diet.

Be careful about recommending “1984“.

Being still a teenager, with hormones flooding his brain and turning it into jello, he will probably have leftist-liberal leanings and regard that book as an instruction manual.
