> Teenage boys seem to especially enjoy spinning old mom like a top. The parent teaches disrespect for both himself and the child.

And it's not like society discourages it any more -- I recall a Taco Bell commercial some years ago which had me avoiding Taco Bell for about 5 years (and I still don't go there very often, usually when others want to get something there):

Some obviously uncool, dweebish parents are in a car with their kids. The kids are clearly well fed, cared for to the point of boredom, and anything and everything their parents say to them is met by a sneering "whatever" type of attitude.

The parents suggest Taco Bell for dinner, and suddenly the parents aren't quite so uncool.

-- Now, I ask you -- what social result would you expect from a commercial that tells kids that they should go ahead and sneer at their parents for being "uncool"?

I got news for you, kids: The reason parents are "uncool" is because of all the time they might spend "staying cool" is instead spent caring for you and making sure that your needs are fulfilled.

This sort of thing is a social rot -- we allow/encourage the denigration of every positive social value there is, while hyping irresposibility and other negative social values.

When it all collapses, that will be the underlying cause.

Latte Links (10/24)...

Some stuff I’m reading while watching Iowa play Michigan State tonight. Go Hawkeyes! If they win this game it will mark the first time they’ve been 8-0. Anyway, here’s the latest links.

Yelling also becomes common when you are frustrated at not being allowed to spank, and you are not able to gain control any other way.

I completely agree with Indy Jane. Spanking is still necessary to discipline them, and then try to talk to them out of love and explain the reason for spanking. Yelling is another word for impatience.

Yelling is simply lazy parenting or exhausted parenting. Parents are wiped out after working all day and children are starved for parental attention of any kind.

Early discipline and spanking as necessary facilitates a peaceful, secure home.
