PJM: Does Sarah Palin Lead The Tea Party Movement?

February 10, 2010 / 9:39 am • By Dr. Melissa Clouthier

There’s a lot of talk about who is and is not in charge of the Tea Party movement. Most of what passes for insight from the mainstream media is utterly bogus. They simply cannot comprehend the phenomenon or the motivations of those involved.

I write about it for Pajamas today. Here’s a snippet:

People who talk about a tea party leader have no experience with tea parties. If they did, they’d realize the notion of a tea party leader or someone “hijacking the movement” would be absurd.

Tea party participants aren’t as recalcitrant and generally grumpy as Ron Paul followers, but they’re close. And while less conspiratorial than the Paul followers, they’re certainly more ticked off.

Jim Geraghty summed it up on Twitter this week: “Trying to direct & control the tea party movement is like trying to unionize the hitmen in Grosse Pointe Blank.”

Also from Pajamas, Bill Whittle produces the single best explanation for the movement yet. It’s excellent and well worth the 9 minute watch time.

Who does lead the Tea Party movement?

I added this comment to your poll of “Who leads the Tea Party Movement…

To even ask the question disqualifies one for membership in a Tea Party. Liberals simply CANNOT wrap their minds around the concept of mere PEOPLE determining their own destines, without someone else telling them what to do.

I think the danger is more in her being anointed as a leader or spokesperson by the news media and becoming popularly accepted as such, as she suggests things like the Tea Party needs to work through the Republican Party. Not all the participants at the past year’s rallies were Republican, and even all Republicans are not supportive of John McCain. Controlling the message of the movement may become a problem.

I want to see the Tea Party solutions. A lot of us non-teapartiers see the teapartiers like the teapartiers saw the anti-war demonstrators (sorry if that was confusing!). The basic concern may be valid but the vast majority of the rank-and-file are clueless. They don’t quite see that the solutions may be worse than the problems.
