My Favorite President: George Washington

George Washington wins the best president sweepstakes. Why? Because he could have had absolute power, it was offered to him, and he went home to Mt. Vernon to live out his days as an American citizen instead.

Our current presidents seem intent on gathering more power to themselves. George Washington provided a good example of NOT doing that.

Some trivia here:

  • Washington was the only Founding Fathers to free his slaves.
  • He was the only president who did not live in Washington D.C.
  • The nation’s capital, along with 1 state, 31 counties and 17 cities (Maybe 18 counting the town of “George,” in central Washington State) are named in his honor.
    • As a farmer, Washington grew marijuana on his farm and promoted it’s growth. (In the 1790s, the crop was grown mainly for its industrial value as hemp and for soil stabilization. It was many years later that the recreational and illegal use of marijuana became popular.)
  • As a farmer, he is credited with introducing the mule to America.
  • He was the first Mason to serve as president.
  • He was the only president to win a unanimous vote of the Electoral College.
  • Washington’s 2nd inaugural address was the shortest ever delivered - 135 words.

    • Teach your kids about George Washington. He probably gets a paragraph in school.

    Australia: Off To The Gold Coast!

    Hi all! Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and joy-filled family time!

    We’re on our way to Australia’s Gold Coast. That’s the Great Barrier Reef. If I can, I’ll report from there. Still can’t figure out pictures to my great frustration.

    I Am Thanksgiving Goddess, Hear Me Roar

    Thanksgiving brings out the grrrrrrrril in me.

    I need to gear up for Thanksgiving. Here’s the menu and what I’m responsible for:

    Two turkeys (one big one dries out, I’ll cook one today ahead of time to make gravy and flavor the stuffing)
    Mashed Potatoes (using the recipe, again, ahead of time, given to me by Right Wing Sparkle)
    Stuffing
    Sweet potato-apple thing (I don’t even like them. This is for my SIL, brother and sister.)
    Green bean casserole with fried onions on top of course
    Dutch Apple Pie with Homemade whip cream
    Decorating and cleaning the house (it’s at my house)
    Airport transport

    My mom:
    Pumpkin pie
    Rolls
    Cranberry sauce
    Secret-family-recipe grape salad

    SIL:
    Chocolate pie

    Sister:
    Nothing. She’s flying in from Australia and will be jet-lagged. That, and she’s even less domestic than I am.

    Men:
    Football & Adult beverages
    Clean-up

    I feel like I’m forgetting something. Oh, I’ll probably do some carrots, too, and there will be a veggie plate and crackers and stuff.

    Do you notice the gender divide? Yeah, I noticed that, too. Meh. I don’t mind cooking. Usually, I’m doing everything on my mom’s list, too. This is the first time in a couple years that I’ve had help, so I’m actually looking forward to that.

    Domestic goddess. That’s me.
